Additional information

Issued to commemorate John Paul II's third pastoral visit to Poland in June 1987, this coin appeared during a politically charged moment — the communist government was still nominally in power, yet authorizing gold commemoratives honoring a Pope whose influence had already destabilized the regime from within. The visit itself drew millions and was widely understood as tacit acknowledgment that Warsaw had lost the ideological battle.

Struck by Mennica Polska under conditions of limited distribution, most examples went directly into private collections rather than circulation.
