Poland's 1979 gold Kopernik trial strikes were produced by Mennica Polska as test pieces ahead of circulating and collector issues, a standard practice at the mint for evaluating die quality and alloy behavior before committing to full production runs. The 2000-złoty denomination placed this squarely in the prestige issue category — routine złoty coinage of the late communist period ran far lower in face value, and high-denomination gold pieces were primarily intended for export and hard-currency generation under the PEWEX system rather than domestic circulation.
