Issued in 1979 to mark the centenary of Marie Skłodowska-Curie's birth, this piece appeared during a period when the Polish state was making pointed use of her legacy — reclaiming her identity as fundamentally Polish at a time when French institutions had long dominated her public biography. The NBP produced gold commemoratives sparingly in this era, and the 2000 Złotych denomination placed this firmly outside everyday circulation from the moment of issue.
Curie remains the only person awarded Nobel Prizes in two separate sciences, in 1903 (Physics) and 1911 (Chemistry).
