Kazimierz I, called "the Restorer," rebuilt the Polish state after the catastrophic pagan uprising of the 1030s leveled much of the ecclesiastical and administrative infrastructure his father Mieszko II had inherited. The 1980 issue belongs to a gold commemorative series the National Bank launched in the late 1970s honoring medieval Piast rulers — a program with unmistakable political undertones, given the communist government's periodic need to anchor legitimacy in a pre-partition national identity.
The .900 fineness places it in line with other issues in the Piast series rather than the higher-purity pieces Poland struck for international bullion markets.
