2000 Zlotys Duke Mieszko I, Trial Strike

This trial strike was produced as part of Poland's internal evaluation process for a proposed 2000 Złotych commemorative honoring Mieszko I, the 10th-century Piast ruler whose baptism in 966 AD is conventionally treated as the founding moment of the Polish state. The 1979 date places it within the late Gierek era, when the communist government selectively rehabilitated medieval Polish national figures — Mieszko among them — as a way of anchoring socialist Poland within a longer historical continuum that predated any ideological inconvenience.

Bronze trial strikes of this type were produced in extremely small quantities for approval purposes and rarely entered any distribution channel.
