The 2000 Yuan Panda is the one-kilogram denomination of China's annual Panda bullion series, first introduced in 1982 by the People's Bank of China partly as a foreign exchange vehicle and partly to compete with established Western bullion programs like the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf. The 2015 issue holds particular significance as the last year the series specified coins by weight in troy ounces before the mint switched to metric measurements in 2016 — a change that briefly disrupted international collector markets and created compatibility questions for existing holders of the series.
