The 155.55g Panda is the kilo denomination of China's annual Panda bullion program, which the People's Bank of China launched in 1982. Each year brings a new reverse design — a deliberate policy decision that distinguishes the series from most sovereign bullion programs and has driven strong collector demand alongside investment buying. The 2012 issue was struck the same year China surpassed South Africa as the world's largest gold producer, a shift that had been building since the mid-2000s as South African output declined sharply.
Kilo Pandas from this period were produced in comparatively small quantities relative to the fractional issues.
