Mongolia issued a series of gold sports coins in the early 1990s as part of a broader hard-currency generation strategy common among post-Soviet states suddenly free to mint commemoratives for the international collector market. The .583 fineness — sometimes called 14-karat — was a deliberate commercial choice, keeping gold content and production costs low while still qualifying the pieces for the precious metals collector trade. Boxing was not an arbitrary subject: Mongolian athletes had won Olympic medals in the sport as far back as 1968, and the discipline retained genuine national prestige.
