Uganda issued a series of footballer-themed coins in the mid-2000s aimed squarely at the collector and novelty market, with Peter Schmeichel appearing alongside other European stars of the 1990s. Schmeichel had retired from professional football in 2003, making this a retrospective tribute rather than a contemporary issue. Silver-plated copper-nickel was the standard substrate for this type of low-cost commemorative production, typically farmed out to private mints operating under license rather than struck at a national facility.
