| Obverse description | The Somali national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a light-blue shield charged with a five-pointed star, supported on either side by leopards rampant, with a scroll below. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF SOMALIA arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the denomination 2000 SHILLINGS is inscribed along the lower rim. The design is struck in proof finish against a mirror-like field. |

Leo IX, born Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg, was one of the more consequential reform popes of the 11th century — he spent more of his pontificate traveling synods across Europe than sitting in Rome. His tenure ended badly: captured by the Normans at the Battle of Civitate in 1053, he died in captivity the following year. Somalia's connection to any of this is purely commercial. By the mid-2000s, the country's nominal government was licensing its sovereign coinage rights to foreign distributors producing collector pieces with no domestic circulation whatsoever.
