2000 Shillings Henry M. Stanley

Henry Morton Stanley's connection to Uganda is complicated. His 1875 visit to the court of Kabaka Mutesa I of Buganda prompted Stanley to write letters to British newspapers urging Christian missionaries to follow — a direct catalyst for the subsequent missionary influx and, ultimately, British colonial interest in the region. Uganda commemorating him is, in its own way, an awkward historical choice.
