Struck to mark the golden wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1997, this is one of dozens of near-identical commemorative issues produced that year by Commonwealth and associated territories minting under license arrangements. Uganda had no particular constitutional relationship with the British Crown at the time — it became a republic on independence in 1962 — making the issue a commercial decision rather than a dynastic one.
