Uganda's Golden Wedding commemorative was part of a wave of late-1990s issues produced by foreign mints on behalf of smaller central banks seeking hard currency revenue from coin collectors rather than circulation. The Bank of Uganda had no particular institutional connection to the British royal family; the issue was essentially a licensing arrangement, with the commemorative theme chosen entirely for its export sales potential to Commonwealth-market collectors.
The copper-nickel version was struck alongside a silver proof issue, the base metal piece serving the budget end of the collector market.
