| Additional information |
Visakha Vidyalaya in Colombo was founded in 1917 as one of the first schools in Ceylon established specifically to provide English-medium education to Buddhist girls — a deliberate counterweight to the Christian missionary schools that dominated elite female education at the time. The centenary in 2017 coincided with renewed national debate about the school's continued status as a leading state institution. The gold plating on the reverse is a production choice the Central Bank has applied selectively to commemorative silvers of this period, distinguishing institutional anniversaries from standard issues.
