2000 Riels

Cambodia's mid-1990s note series arrived during the fragile reconstruction period following UNTAC's administration and the 1993 elections — a government newly reassembled after decades of war was now also managing a dollarized economy where riel notes of any denomination were treated with deep public skepticism. The 2000 riel denomination sat at an awkward middle value in a country where the US dollar handled most transactions above street-market level.

Oberthur's Rennes facility produced this series with a security thread but no hologram or color-shifting ink — modest by the standards of what major issuing banks were specifying elsewhere that decade.
