| Descrizione del dritto | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing five escutcheons in cross arrangement, each charged with five bezants, enclosed within a bordure of castles — surmounted by a royal crown with cross finial. The denomination '2000' appears to the left of the shield in the field. The circular legend reads in Latin around the periphery, separated by dots and punctuated by three ornamental quatrefoil rosettes to the right of the shield. The entire design is contained within a finely reeded border. |

Maria I ascended to the Portuguese throne in 1777 following the death of her father José I, and one of her earliest monetary acts was reorganizing colonial Brazilian coinage — the Rio mint had operated under shifting administrative control throughout the late colonial period, and the 2000 réis gold series issued under her name represents the stabilization of that production. The Rio de Janeiro facility had been formally reestablished in 1699 after an earlier mint at Bahia proved inadequate for handling the flood of gold from interior Minas Gerais.
Bentes 286 is the standard attribution, though minor die variations within the 1787–1793 production window are documented.
