Beschrijving voorzijde Central device consisting of the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles — surmounted by a royal crown. Five small crosses appear in the angles between the shield and the surrounding legend. The circular legend reads IOSEPHUS.I DG.PORT.REX, identifying the issuer as José I, by the Grace of God King of Portugal, with the denomination 2000 flanking the lower portion of the shield. The entire design is enclosed within a milled border.

Aanvullende informatie

This piece was struck in the same year the Lisbon earthquake of November 1st, 1755, killed an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 people and destroyed much of the city — including, critically, the Casa da Moeda itself. Production was severely disrupted in the aftermath, and surviving examples from this year carry the implicit uncertainty of a mint operating under catastrophic conditions. Whether struck before or after the quake is rarely determinable from the coin alone.
