| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a floriated cross pattée with fleurs-de-lis at each terminal, dividing the field into four quadrants each bearing a stylized S-shaped device. A small azor (goshawk) countermark is visible in the upper right quadrant, serving as the authenticating punch applied at Angra. The surrounding legend in Latin characters reads partially around the irregular hammered flan. The overall style is consistent with late 16th-century Iberian hammered gold coinage, with characteristic flat relief and irregular planchet edges. |
