Issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Banco Central del Uruguay, founded in 1967 when Uruguay separated its central banking functions from the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay. The BCU's first decades were defined by chronic inflation that periodically rendered Uruguayan currency nearly worthless — the country went through a full monetary redenomination in 1975 and again in 1993, when the nuevo peso was replaced at a rate of 1,000 to one.
The 2,000-peso face value is nominal; no circulating 2,000-peso coin existed in everyday commerce at this date.
