Struck to mark the turn of the millennium, this issue belongs to a wave of commemorative platinum coinage released by smaller nations in 1999–2000, most produced under contract at major European or North American mints rather than domestic facilities. The Dominican Republic has no platinum-striking capability of its own. KM#109 was almost certainly a limited-edition bullion-adjacent piece aimed squarely at the collector market, with mintages kept tight enough to justify the metal cost but never intended for any form of circulation.
