Obverse description Facing bust of Rodrigo de Bastidas, the Spanish conquistador and founder of Santa Marta, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field. The subject is depicted wearing a ruffled Elizabethan collar and period armor, with a short beard and mustache. To the upper left of the portrait appears a small shield-shaped armorial device. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA arcs across the upper field, while RODRIGO DE BASTIDAS is inscribed below the bust, and the denomination PESOS 2000 PESOS appears prominently at the bottom. The design is framed by a continuous border of raised beads.
