This piece belongs to Spain's long-running commemorative series revisiting monarchs who never appeared on circulating coinage during their own reigns. Luis I ruled for just seven months in 1724 before dying of smallpox at eighteen, making him one of the shortest-reigning Bourbon monarchs in Spanish history. His father Philip V, who had abdicated in his favor, simply resumed the throne afterward — an unusual dynastic reversal with no real parallel in the dynasty's Spanish tenure.
