Additional information

Spain issued a long series of commemorative silver coins in the lead-up to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, beginning well before the Games themselves — this 1990 piece is among the earliest in that program. The International Olympic Committee awarded Barcelona the 1992 Summer Games in October 1986, defeating bids from Paris, Brisbane, Belgrade, Birmingham, and Amsterdam in a vote that went to six rounds.

The Barcelona organizing committee's logo became one of the more recognizable marks of any modern Olympic Games, designed by Josep Maria Trias and widely reproduced across the full commemorative coin series.
