2000 Pesetas

The 1992 date on this note is not incidental — the series was timed to coincide with Spain's twin centrepiece events that year: the Barcelona Olympics and Expo '92 in Seville. It was a deliberate act of national projection, a new family of notes released into a country that had spent the previous decade dramatically reorienting itself within Europe following EEC accession in 1986.

Reinhold Gerstetter, the German engraver whose name appears in the margin credits alongside the Spanish team, was one of the most in-demand banknote engravers of the late twentieth century, contributing to issues across multiple continents. His involvement here signals how seriously FNMT treated this series. Three signatures on the face reflects the transitional signing arrangement at the Banco de España during that period.
