Additional information

Issued to mark Stockholm's 750th anniversary, this coin commemorates the city's founding traditionally dated to 1252, when Birger Jarl is credited with establishing a fortified settlement controlling the waterway between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic. The historical record is murkier than the round number suggests — no founding charter survives, and the 1252 date derives largely from a single letter referencing the town.

Sweden's commemorative gold program of this period produced strictly limited runs through Riksbanken, with pieces sold directly to collectors at issue price rather than circulated.
