Slavonice, a small town in southern Bohemia near the Austrian border, survived the twentieth century's upheavals largely intact — wartime destruction passed it by, and post-war socialist redevelopment showed little interest in a backwater with no industrial value. That neglect preserved one of the most complete ensembles of Renaissance burgher architecture in Central Europe. The Czech National Bank's series celebrating Late Renaissance architecture used Slavonice deliberately: the gabled facades there date overwhelmingly to the late sixteenth century, a coherent streetscape rather than a handful of isolated monuments.
KM#68 is part of a multi-year CNB gold program begun in the late 1990s documenting Czech architectural heritage by region and period.
