The Lao PDR has issued zodiac-themed collector pieces consistently since the 1990s, targeting the Southeast and East Asian gift market where Tiger year pieces carry particular cultural premium — 2022 was indeed a Year of the Tiger in the Chinese lunisolar calendar, the first since 2010. These large-format silver pieces with gold plating are produced primarily for export and rarely if ever circulate within Laos itself, where the kip denomination shown bears no relationship to the coin's actual bullion or collector value.
