By 1995, Suriname was already in the grip of severe hyperinflation — the guilder had been losing value at a catastrophic rate since the early 1990s, partly driven by government deficit spending following the collapse of Dutch development aid after the 1982 December murders. A 2,000-guilder note would have seemed extraordinary a decade earlier; by mid-decade it was grocery money.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement here is routine for the Caribbean region, but the note's useful circulation life was short. Within a few years, denomination creep made it functionally obsolete, and Suriname eventually replaced the entire guilder with the Surinamese dollar in 2004 at a rate of 1,000 to 1.
