| Reverse description | Two draped female figures, the Greek Muses Thalia and Melpomene, are depicted in high relief against a richly colored mosaic background rendered in blue, red, and gold tesserae with a Greek meander border. Thalia, Muse of Comedy, is seated in the left foreground wearing a diadem and classical robes, holding a gilt smiling theatrical mask. Melpomene, Muse of Tragedy, stands dynamically to the right, also classically draped, holding aloft a gilt weeping mask and gazing downward. Both figures are rendered in a neoclassical sculptural style with fine drapery detail and gilt waist accents. The inscriptions THALIA COMEDY arc along the upper left field and MELPOMENE TRAGEDY arc along the right field. |
