Djibouti's 2000 Francs denomination was introduced as part of the series commemorating the twentieth anniversary of independence from France in 1997 — a pointed political gesture given that the notes were simultaneously printed by the Banque de France in Chamalières. The Banque Nationale de Djibouti had relied on French printing contracts since the territory's monetary transition from the Franc de la Côte Française des Somalis, and that dependency never really ended.
Pick 40 carries only a watermark as its declared security feature, modest by late-1990s standards, reflecting the relatively low counterfeiting pressure on a currency with such limited regional reach.
