The Siberian brown bear (*Ursus arctos middendorffi* is the Kodiak subspecies — Middendorff's bear is a distinct Siberian population named after the Baltic German naturalist Alexander Theodor von Middendorff, whose 1842–1845 expedition across Siberia produced the first systematic zoological survey of the region's megafauna.
