The central field is dominated by a high-relief, antiqued colourised rendition of Vincent van Gogh's celebrated 1889 painting 'The Starry Night,' executed with remarkable sculptural depth. A towering dark cypress tree rises from the lower left, its flame-like silhouette reaching into a turbulent night sky filled with swirling vortices of blue, grey, and white. Luminous golden stellar halos and a large radiant moon occupy the upper right of the composition, rendered in amber and orange tones with translucent colour application. In the lower centre and right, the village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is depicted in miniature relief, with a prominent church spire and clustered rooftops nestled beneath rolling hills. |

Van Gogh's The Starry Night has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941, acquired from a private dealer; the painting itself has never been owned by any African institution or government.
