Bernward of Hildesheim, the bishop-engineer behind the bronze doors and column at Hildesheim Cathedral, died in 1022 — making 2022 the millennium of his death and the direct occasion for this coin. His metalworking projects were extraordinary enough that Hildesheim's cathedral treasury was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 partly on the strength of objects commissioned under his patronage.
Cameroon has become a reliable vehicle for European ecclesiastical commemoratives aimed squarely at the thematic collector market, with no domestic circulation intended.
