Additional information

Budapest's Állatkert opened in 1866, making it one of the oldest zoos in continental Europe and the first to be established with a scientific mandate rather than as a royal menagerie. The 150th anniversary fell in a period of significant renovation at the zoo, with several of its original Secession-era pavilions — themselves listed as architectural monuments — undergoing restoration. Hungary has a long tradition of issuing commemorative forints for institutional anniversaries of this kind, and the Magyar Nemzeti Bank produced this piece as a non-circulating collector issue in a relatively modest run.
