The Mudi is a Hungarian herding dog breed developed on the Great Plain, recognized as a distinct breed only in 1936 after decades of informal breeding. This 2022 issue belongs to Hungary's ongoing native dog breed series, which has methodically worked through the country's recognized indigenous breeds — the Puli, Komondor, Vizsla, and others — over multiple years. The Mudi remains the rarest of the group in actual population numbers, with breed registries estimating only a few thousand individuals worldwide.
