The 1867 Compromise — the Ausgleich — was engineered largely by Ferenc Deák after nearly two decades of Austrian absolutism following the crushed 1848–49 Hungarian revolution. It created the Dual Monarchy, giving Hungary its own parliament and government while binding both states under a common sovereign, Franz Joseph. The arrangement was always contested domestically; Hungarian nationalists considered it a capitulation, while Austria resisted any further devolution.
This 2017 commemorative marks the 150th anniversary of that settlement. The coin's substantial copper-nickel format places it in the collector-oriented non-circulation series the MNB has issued consistently since the 1990s.
