The 1996 issue commemorates the 1100th anniversary of the Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin — the honfoglalás of 895–896 AD, when the seven Magyar tribes under Árpád crossed the Verecke Pass and established permanent settlement in the region. Hungary had already staged an elaborate millennial celebration in 1896, complete with new monuments, a subway line, and a flood of commemorative coinage, so the 1996 centenary of that centenary carried a distinctly recursive quality.
