Equatorial Guinea's Olympic commemorative program in the late 1970s was largely a revenue exercise — the country had no athletes competing in Moscow and no particular connection to the Games. Issues like this one were produced for the collector and proof-set market, with distribution handled through international coin dealers rather than domestic banking channels. The Banco Central had been issuing commemoratives of this type since the mid-1970s, many of them bearing denominations that bore little relation to the country's actual monetary circulation.
The .927 silver fineness is slightly unconventional, sitting between the more common .900 and .925 standards.
