CARIFESTA — the Caribbean Festival of Arts — was founded in 1972 in Georgetown, Guyana, making the country the natural choice to issue commemorative coinage for the series. The festival was a deliberate political project, championed by Prime Minister Forbes Burnham as a vehicle for pan-Caribbean cultural solidarity at a moment when newly independent nations were still defining their regional identities.
KM#56 is one of several Guyanese commemorative issues from this period that saw limited domestic circulation, with most examples absorbed by collectors rather than commerce.
