São Tomé e Príncipe issued a series of foreign currency-themed coins in the late 1990s as part of a broader collector-focused program — a revenue strategy common among small island nations with limited export economies. This piece commemorates the Luxembourg 25 centimes, a minor circulation coin of the Belgian franc monetary system that Luxembourg shared with Belgium under their economic union. The Luxembourgish centime had no independent monetary weight whatsoever by the time this was struck; the franc itself would be absorbed into the euro just two years later.
