São Tomé and Príncipe gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and has since issued numerous collector pieces tied to foreign nations — a revenue strategy common among small island states with limited domestic numismatic markets. This piece belongs to a series commemorating Italian lire denominations, issued just as Italy was preparing to retire the lira entirely in favor of the euro. The 50 lire itself had circulated in Italy since 1954, its purchasing power reduced to near zero by the time this coin was struck.
