São Tomé and Príncipe issued a series of silver commemoratives in the late 1990s pairing their dobra denomination with the currencies of nations about to disappear into the euro. Belgium's franc, introduced in 1832 and among the oldest continuously-used currencies on the continent at the time of its abolition, was retired on 1 January 2002. These issues were produced for the collector market and saw no domestic circulation on the islands.
