The Gambia's millennium coinage was produced under contract by the British Royal Mint, as the country has never operated its own mint facility. Issues like this one were sold primarily through international coin dealers and collector programs rather than circulated domestically — the butut denomination here is largely nominal, bearing no relation to everyday purchasing power in Banjul at the time.
