Additional information

Poland issued its 1980 XIII Winter Olympics coinage under considerable strain — the country was months away from the Solidarity strikes at Gdańsk that would fundamentally destabilize the Communist government. Trial strikes for this series exist in at least two documented states, with this torch-absent variety catalogued separately by Fischer and Parchimowicz, suggesting the design underwent revision during the approval process rather than as a mint accident.

The .750 silver standard was a deliberate departure from the finer alloys used in earlier Polish collector issues, reflecting hard currency pressures on the NBP at the time.
