Poland's oil and gas sector was largely developed under communist central planning, with domestic natural gas extraction from the Carpathian foothills dating back to the late 19th century — making it one of the older petroleum industries in Europe. The 2003 commemorative program targeted specific industrial and economic themes as part of a broader NBP series honoring Polish infrastructure heritage. Gold issues of this type were struck in very limited quantities and sold directly through the bank, meaning most never circulated at all.
