Reverse description The reverse presents a half-length portrait of Bolesław III Krzywousty (Bolesław III Wrymouth), Duke of Poland, depicted in medieval armour with an elaborately decorated breastplate and a sword held before him, rendered in a sculptural, relief-based style. The figure is shown facing slightly left, conveying authority and martial character consistent with medieval royal iconography. The name BOLESŁAW III KRZYWOUSTY arcs along the upper periphery in Latin script, while the regnal dates 1102–1138 are inscribed along the lower rim. The word PRÓBA, denoting the trial or pattern status of this strike, appears vertically to the right of the effigy in the field.

Additional information

Bolesław III Krzywousty — Wrymouth — died in 1138 leaving a catastrophically ill-conceived succession arrangement that fragmented Poland into competing principalities for nearly two centuries. The NBP's 1982 commemorative draws on a ruler whose reign marked both the height of early Piast consolidation and the beginning of its unraveling. Trial strikes for this series were produced in limited numbers for internal approval, making Pr470 a pre-production artifact rather than a circulated or even distributed piece. The .750 silver composition — lower fineness than many contemporary Polish collector issues — was a cost compromise reflecting hard currency constraints under late communist economic conditions.
