The University of Warsaw was founded in 1816 by Tsar Alexander I, who established it as a tool of Russian imperial policy in the Kingdom of Poland — a calculated move to channel Polish intellectual energy into loyalist institutions rather than nationalist ones. It backfired considerably. The university became a persistent center of resistance, shut down entirely after the November Uprising of 1830 and again after the January Uprising of 1863, not reopening in any meaningful form until Polish independence in 1915.
The .900 gold composition places this squarely in NBP's standard collector gold program, struck in limited quantities for the commemorative market rather than circulation.
