Gdańsk's millennial commemoration in 1996 traced the city's founding to 997 AD, the year Bohemian missionary Adalbert of Prague passed through the settlement — then recorded in chronicles as "Gyddanyzc" — on his way to evangelize the Prussians, a journey that ended with his martyrdom and eventual canonization.
