Obverse description Central effigy of Qi Baishi (齐白石), the celebrated Chinese painter, depicted in a three-quarter facing bust portrait rendered in high relief. The subject is portrayed as an elderly bearded man wearing traditional Chinese attire and spectacles, with fine engraving capturing his distinctive features. To the left of the portrait, an inscription in Chinese characters identifies the subject and gives his life dates 1864–1957. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs across the upper field, and the year of issue 1997 appears prominently in the lower exergue.
