The national title legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery in Chinese characters. The year of issue, 2004, appears in the lower exergue. Part of a multi-year commemorative series issued by the People's Bank of China celebrating the sixteenth-century novel Xi You Ji, attributed to Wu Cheng'en. The 2004 release continued a thematic program that drew considerable speculative buying pressure from both domestic collectors and overseas Chinese communities, driving secondary market premiums well above face value from the point of issue.
