Obverse description Central field depicts a classic scene from the Chinese literary epic Journey to the West, rendered in detailed relief: a group of pilgrims with a laden horse traversing a rocky mountain landscape, accompanied by a robed monk and a dynamic figure in martial pose. The national title legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery in Chinese characters. The year of issue, 2004, appears in the lower exergue. The composition is executed in a narrative, pictorial style characteristic of Chinese commemorative gold coinage of this series.

Additional information

Part of a multi-year commemorative series issued by the People's Bank of China celebrating the sixteenth-century novel Xi You Ji, attributed to Wu Cheng'en. The 2004 release continued a thematic program that drew considerable speculative buying pressure from both domestic collectors and overseas Chinese communities, driving secondary market premiums well above face value from the point of issue.
